“I don’t want to be Chinese.”
When Jerry Zhang heard these words from his preschool-age daughter, Madison, it broke his heart. He knew the reason why — his daughter was very interested in books that featured young White girls, such as “Madeline” and “Eloise”, and wished to be like them. Madeline and Eloise, after all, had interesting lives that were centered around concepts a young child could understand and aspire to. Madison enjoyed these books, but constantly asked why the characters didn’t look like her — why they couldn’t be Chinese, why they couldn’t have darker hair. She was looking for a connection with her beloved characters but was failing to do so because she couldn’t see herself in them.
Jerry tried to get his daughter more books featuring Asian children, but they were always in stories that centered around something like Chinese New Year — in other words, they were entrenched in their otherness, and Madison had a hard time connecting with the characters. It was then that she told her dad that she didn’t want to be Chinese, and Jerry realized he had to do something about it.
“I started Little Ning Books and developed Pepper Zhang to write the books for my daughters that currently don’t exist; books that feature fun, smart and quirky Asian children as the lead character but are also not heavily focused on cultural themes. “I didn’t have Pepper Zhang or anything similar when I was growing up, but I can try to make sure that my children and other children do.” @littleningbooks #aapi #aapiheritagemonth #asianamerican #asianpacificamericanheritagemonth #kidlit insta topsy.oneThe Green Turtle’s adventure continues! Indian-American, UW as Rupi Kaur| "...My parents got married in January 1992, and emigrated to Toronto shortly after. They had around two thousand dollars, two suitcases, no jobs, no family, but a dream to one day build a home. My dad first worked at a gas station, while my mom went door to door selling candy bars. Soon, my mom got a job working at a bank, and they would pay to rent out a room/basement in peopleBeSpoken Stay Spoke featuring: Wendall Tseng, Chinese-American, Seattle University as Grace Lee Bogs| "My inspiration for this photo comes from human rights advocate, Grace Lee Boggs. Born to Chinese immigrants, Grace Lee drew from her Asian background to not only advocate for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, but communities of color with an intentional focus on black communities.
Grace Lee Boggs knew that real, radical change could only come as a result of individual transformation, through intentional and meaningful community work. “I think that too much of our emphasis on struggle has simply been in terms of confrontation and not enough recognition of how much spiritual and moral force is involved in the people who are struggling,” Ms. Boggs told Bill Moyers in a PBS interview in 2007. “We have not emphasized sufficiently the cultural revolution that we have to make among ourselves in order to force the government to do differently.” I am inspired by Grace Lee Boggs because she saw that her struggle as an Asian American was intertwined with the struggles of other marginalized communities. She built communities across ethnic lines, recognizing the power that could come through this type of coalition building. She also recognized the commodification, exploitation, and long oppression of the black body as being central to the movements with which she engaged. Grace Lee Boggs was courageous, unapologetic, and unwavering.
I am still in the process of discovering what Asian American means to me; I have felt that much of my history has been erased, and forgotten. My culture has in part been lost because of my family’s need to assimilate and simultaneously erase our own culture. I am now in the process of reclaiming this for me and my family; encouraging us to remember who we are, who came before us, and who we are today still. “I think we need to appropriate, embrace the idea that we are the leaders we’ve been looking for.” ~Grace Lee Boggs"

The precedents that will be made are those of resilience and grit. The giants of our communities have already paved the ways, have already shown the resilience to survive the turmoil, and have already lent us the shoulders to stand on. Through the leadership of the past, the present have the platform to lead the future. The doors of opportunity have been opened. There are examples of us in the roles we never even dreamed of. There is the community that will sacrifice everything for us to succeed. Our future, our works, our hopes, dreams, and wishes, have the pathway begging to be taken.
Creating history is my dream. Creating history by crafting the narratives of those in my community is my hope. Creating a history that respectfully and legitimately represents the voices of all communities is what I wish for everyday. Striving to lead is my carriage, my means, to accomplish it all. Now is the time to step into roles of leadership. Now is the time to join your community. Now is the time to advocate, lobby, and fight for the rights and needs of those you see around you. But right now and always is the time to serve.
Every day I struggle with the question of who I am serving. Am I here to further my own career through education or to learn how to serve those in need. What community do I need to help? Which social injustice needs me to expose? Where is the place that is still seeking for service? Over the course of my time at the University of Washington, I have been striving to answer these questions. The answer is I am here to learn how to serve. I am here to serve as many communities as possible. Every social injustice needs to be addressed and the places that needs the most is where I will serve. I find myself fulfilling these in the roles of leadership.

When I am one of the leaders, I will make precedents for others to follow." #AAPIBeSpoken #StaySpoke #BeSpokenStaySpoke #Activism #AAPI
