The goal was to give a true picture of what the process was like. In order to expose students to the problems solving process, they were asked to tackle 4 challenges. For each one, they were required to follow a PLAN - DO - REVIEW - AMEND - SHARE process. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to extend their knowledge of key components of their AS and A2 Biology and Chemistry CIE courses through a variety of practical tasks.
The trip also provided an insight into the variety of apparatus available in University labs and how a lab session at University might run. Students were able to interact with both PhD students and post-doc researchers who were on-hand to assist with the complex practicals undertaken.
Year 12 Biologists were carrying out root tip squashes to observe the different stages of mitosis in onion roots in addition to performing a bacterial plate streak and gram staining of bacteria.
Year 13 Chemists have recently been learning about the chemical composition of paracetamol and were able to synthesise this themselves. Thanks to @UoNMalaysia for inviting us to the campus and running these excellent sessions. More pics here: http://ow.ly/oW4z30gZBUg

The competition was held at ISKL with 5 schools participating. The students were challenged to complete 10 different climbs of varying difficulty. For each climb the students accumulated points recorded on a scorecard. The higher you climbed the more points you gained. The hardest route of the competition was the deciding factor on who would be the overall highest scorer. Zhen Ning in Yr 11 successfully reached the top of this climb in his 3rd and final attempt. He was the only competitor to successfully complete all of the climbs, securing 1st place. Zi Yang, also in Yr 11, demonstrated a high level of skill to secure joint 3rd place. All of the team challenged themselves, achieving personal bests utilising skills learnt over the term in the weekly climbing CCA. The GIS climbing team finished in 2nd place overall. A great achievement by our students.
