This Proba-V’s 100 m false-colour image, shows us the northern part of the rugged, weathered peaks and rocky gorges of the Flinders Ranges, the largest mountain range in the South Australian Outback.
The high plateau of the Gammon Ranges on the eastern side and the alternating hills and ridges, often with a gentle slope on one side and steep slope on the other (cuesta landforms), make for a dramatic and beautiful landscape.
The region has a semi-arid climate with hot dry summers and cool winters. ItWinter scene in Iceberg Alley
The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador is renowned for spotting whales and icebergs as they migrate, in opposite directions, in Spring and Summer seasons. Newfoundland, the vast island just visible in the south of the image, and the Labrador peninsula are separated by the Straight of Belle Isle.
PROBA-V takes a peek at this same area during wintertime, when average monthly temperatures drop to between -5 and -10°C and occasional ice waves crashing into the shore make for a spectacular sight.
This makes for a beautiful, snowy landscape, with the formation of arctic sea ice shown as white-blue plumes. It is common for this asymmetrically shaped sea ice to reach as far as 50° latitude in these parts, which is comparable in latitude to Belgium in Europe.

In November 2015, UNESCO proclaimed July 26 as the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, thereby underlined the importance of the unique but vulnerable mangrove ecosystems around the world. Mangroves provide substantial benefits, by improving food security, protecting against storms or shoreline erosion, providing habitats of rare wildlife species and sequestering and storing blue carbon important for mitigating climate change.

To this occasion, PROBA-V visits the Can Gio mangrove forest and biosphere reserve in Vietnam, ~40 km southeast of Ho Chi Min city that is visible in grey tones at the top of the image. The myriad of waterways through the mangrove forest (dark red, centre) and agricultural fields (dark tones on the banks) are particularly striking. This is put in contrast to the city’s growth in population, which has nearly doubled to 8.5 million over the last 20 years.

The 100 m false-colour image of 16 July 2016 shows us Lake Manicouagan, a ring-like lake in central Quebec, Canada. It shows the huge, almost perfect circle that scientists believe resulted from the impact of a giant meteorite, 200 million years ago. The collision melted the rock and pressure created the central mound. The crater is a multiple-ring structure about 100 km across, with the reservoir at its 70 km diameter inner ring being its most prominent feature. It surrounds an inner island plateau called René-Levasseur Island. The lake and island are clearly seen from space and are sometimes called the ‘eye of Quebec’. #ProbaV #minisatellite #EarthObservation

Located in the highlands of southwestern Bolivia at an altitude of 3650 m, Salar de Uyuni is also extremely flat, varying less than 1 m across its expanse. It is so flat that it is often used to calibrate laser and radar altimeters on satellites.
The salt plains were formed 42 000–30 000 years ago as a result of transformations between several prehistoric lakes. The crusty top layer, several metres thick in places, lies on a brine rich in lithium (containing 50–70% of the world’s reserves), potassium and magnesium.
The false-colour Proba-V image was acquired on 5 April 2017. On the western side of the Salar de Uyuni, some wavy patterns are visible, while blue shades on the northern and eastern edges indicate flooded areas. The small rectangular patches to the south of the salt flat indicate a large lithium mining area.

Along with the more populated, nearby woredas in the Somali Region, and neighbouring parts of Kenya (to the southwest) and Somalia (to the east), this area in the Horn of Africa is regularly hit by drought, often driven by El Niño climatic events. With cumulative rains between June 2016 and June 2017 reaching the first or second lowest level in 36 years, the prolonged drought drove a major food security emergency and marked the areas as priority for international food aid, disaster relief efforts and health workers.

The right part of this image, captured by the Proba-V minisatellite on 11 September 2016, shows us mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania which is the highest mountain in Africa. The mountain is part of the Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major climbing destination, but also a subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers and disappearing ice fields. Kilimanjaro is a large stratovolcano and is composed of three distinct volcanic cones: Kibo, the highest; Mawenzi 5149 m high, and Shira, the shortest, 4005 m high. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, while Kibo is dormant and could erupt again.

Betsiboka is further known as the Red River and owes its distinctive colour to the vast amounts of reddish-orange silt it carries out to sea. These large quantities of river sediments are evidence of large-scale soil erosion that is occurring in the northwestern part of the island in the past 50 years.
Located in the southeast corner of the image, is Ankarafantsika National Park, home to the long-tailed, big-footed mouse, an endangered, nocturnal rodent that is only found in northwest Madagascar. Its patches of dense, dry tropical forest are highlighted in red and inhabited by mouse lemurs (world’s smallest primates) and 129 recorded bird species of which more than half are endemic to the island.

The three 100-m resolution Proba-V images shown here were acquired on 27 April 2014, 20 July 2015 and 22 January 2016 respectively.
Occupying a depression in the Altiplano mountains, the saline Lake Poopó has in the past spanned an area of 3000 square kilometres – greater than France’s Réunion Island.
But the lake’s shallow nature, with an average depth of just 3 m, coupled with its arid highland surroundings, means that it is very sensitive to fluctuations in climate.

This year Earth Overshoot Day lands today (2 August 2017). Overshoot Day is the day on calendar when humanity has used up the resources that it takes the planet the full year to regenerate.
About half of the remaining global rain forest is located in the Amazon area. From the 1970s onwards, many Amazonian rain forest has been cut down, mainly for cattle farming serving the international beef and leather trade.
Until 2004, the average deforestation rate was about 18 700 km2 per year.* The rates have considerably decreased from 2005 onwards, but still 108 000 km2 of rain forest have disappeared since then. Fortunately, the Brazilian government is taking efforts to recover and reforest degraded pastures, in order to restrengthen Earth’s vital lungs.
The 100m false-colour image of 3 August 2016 shows Rio Branco, a city in western Brazil. Deforested areas appear as a fishbone pattern in grey-blue, with the distinct southern edge forming the Brazilian-Bolivian border. The unaffected rain forest is visible in red colours.
