Just donated some old science ⚛️books 📚! I encourage you to do the same 🤗if you have ANY old books lying around your house🏠. ItThis time last week I was sharing my life as a scientist 👩‍🔬& my journey from young girl & wannabe medic to being just over a year away from becoming a doctor of stem cell biology.... hopefully...with some really enthusiast 16 & 17 year olds!
.
We chatted about how to choose the right university 🎓, stem cells, scientists who selfie & of course the HUGE variety of careers you can have with a degree in STEM! I got some great feedback saying that it was really inspiring & relatable - which is exactly what I wanted it to be! 😁
.
I left feeling that I had given them the story & the contact of a real life scientist that they could relate to & ask advice to and questions of. I feel I left them with that person that I wish I had known when I was their age!
.
Not having that role model when I was younger is something that I really wish I had had - just to open my eyes to the endless possibilities in science 🔬 so I could have taken advantage of more opportunities throughout uni. And it is something I want to continue doing. I LOVE the idea of scientists 👩‍🔬going into schools 👩‍🏫or even just over Skype. It enhances learning, inspires the next generation of scientists & also with social media gives students someone to follow & learn from. Its the perfect accompaniment to textbook learning 📖
.
This is something I am going to continue to do. Head to schools for talks & more interactive activities or just Skype in to compliment a lesson. And I want to make this my next project. Get a variety of scientists, teachers & schools involved! Theres projects like this in Canada & the US but I havent found anything like this in the UK. Something that I am determined to change.
.
So lets get the ball rolling... if youre a scientist that would get involved with this then let me know? Or if youre a teacher that would want to get scientists into the classroom? Or even if youre a parent & think your child would love this... let me know in the comments!
.
.
.
I also want to thank @science.sam for inspiring my talk title. I was struggling to come up with something catchy & I came across yours which was just exactly what I wanted to say. insta topsy.one“Know what you’re made of.”⠀
⠀
An important reminder both physically or philosophically speaking.⠀
⠀
The above image is a snapshot of a how a protein is visualized in 3️⃣D space. The ‘ribbon’ model accurately portrays the way the amino acids are arranged in either an alpha-helix, a beta strand or more flexible or random loops. ⠀
⠀
I’ve been working on understanding the chemistry behind this specific protein for almost 5⃣ years. In this time I’ve been able to use techniques like NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) to demonstrate that certain amino acids (the coloured ⚪⚫🔴) are crucial for getting the protein to get it’s job done.⠀
⠀
Now, you may not light up with excitement over coloured ⚪⚫🔴like I do (or maybe you do!) but learning about how proteins do what they do is key to understanding how organisms work as a whole. ⠀
⠀
⌚ And we still have so much to learn!⠀
⠀
👖 We now know that the human genome contains approximately 20 000 genes that code for proteins – this is the proteome! Out of those 20000 about 17 – 18.5K have been identified. ⠀
⠀
Identified. Meaning that they have an ‘identity’ so we know they are there and the sequence but… how they look, work, and do what they do…? Let’s just say ‘PROCESS PENDING’.
⠀
Not only is the sheer number of proteins in the human proteome intimidating, so is the challenge of researching a protein in the lab. ⠀
⠀
Proteins are never static, they are very particular when it comes to choosing the type of environment they want to be in and who they want to hang out with in that environment. (Maybe I get those attributes from my proteins then ?🤔 )⠀
⠀
BUT the work in understanding these key players is important because knowing what a protein does and HOW it does what is does can be revolutionary in terms of our healthcare.⠀
⠀
Amazing things we take for granted everyday, like delivering oxygen throughout our hard-working muscles, breaking down our food into energy or even growing new cells, our 20000 proteins are working hard at making happen. When we know how proteins are working right we can understand whats happening when things go wrong.⠀
⠀
in 2001 the HGP was published, when do you think the Human Proteome Project will be out? insta topsy.onePreparing buffers for my gel filtration experiments. Happy Tuesday! Pathogens use #virulence factors such as toxins to help establish infections, but are usually detected in time by our immune systems and the microbes destroyed. #Pseudomonas aeruginosa, however, produces a virulence factor called #pyoverdine (green colour) that can evade detection, contributing to chronic bacterial infections seen in CF lungs.

• • •
Consider this: in 1984, a 25-year old graduate student in molecular biology saved the lives of countless people she would never meet. A PhD student at UC Berkeley, Carol Greider discovered an enzyme that explained aging. Her discovery of telomerase led to new cancer therapies, and provided a target for drugs that could fight tumors. She received the Nobel Prize for telomerase in 2009 with her advisor, and her incredible impact is ongoing.
•
Receiving a Nobel Prize is a great, sought-after honor that is often publicized because the discovery is directly traceable to a few individuals. The collective impact of graduate student research, though, is harder to put into words. But sadly, we are not doing enough to support these individuals.
•
As of last year, 50% of all PhD students quit before the end of their degree. There was even a 7-year project funded by Pfizer and Ford created to promote completion of PhDs, and to try and identify reasons why students kept leaving. One major reason? Mental health.
•
Last year, 64% of all PhD candidates were international (in comparison to 9% of undergraduates).
•
There is a pending crisis in the US. That is to say, if the current administration is able to move forward with tax propositions that would further hinder the motivation of students to pursue PhDs, there will surely be a reckoning as the impact is realized.
•
Eliminating tax code 117(d) would eliminate tax waivers on tuition for graduate students. At current and rising tuition rates, this means we would be responsible for paying at least double our taxes (in some extreme cases, 400%), money that comes out of an already low wage (24-30k/year, regardless of location). Students will have to reconsider their living situations, their degree choice, and many graduate students are supporting families. Surely the applicant pool will also decline, leading to a decreased work force of those from higher education.
•
Since this bill has yet to be passed by the senate, and if you value education in the US, I urge you to speak to your state senators, and voice your concerns.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the second edition of Oceanswell’s Marine Conservation Conversations. I am super chuffed at how this session went even though every month I learn something new. This month we discussed a paper about stilt fishing in Sri Lanka and learnt about the importance of traditional ecological knowledge, of investing in areas long term, the importance of context, communication and so much more. If you would like to participate in our third session please LIKE @Oceanswellorg and keep your eyes peeled for our December date or risk missing out. I am super excited to keep growing this community of like-minded marine enthusiasts and anticipate that someday soon it won’t matter if I am in the room or not - the discussions will continue and action will happen! Thanks to MAS Innovations for letting us use the HIVE for these discussions. insta topsy.oneSo I did a thing...😬 more precisely I removed 10 inches of something 😂

I’ve always loved my long hair! It really is tied in to my confidence and self-image, plus, Adam really likes it 😜 And although I’d been toying with the idea of donating it for a bit, I hadn’t been able to go through with the cut. Then last week my family suffered the sudden and unexpected loss of my grandfather to cancer, and I decided that this was a good time to take the leap and put my hair to good use!
